About this course

This presentation explores the role of family, peer, and community support in substance use recovery, highlighting evidence-based strategies for engaging loved ones in treatment, overcoming barriers to family involvement, and improving long-term recovery outcomes.

Learning Objectives

  • Define recovery capital and describe how family, peer, and community supports improve outcomes for patients with substance use disorders.
  • Explain the evidence base for family involvement, including how approaches like family systems therapy, community reinforcement and family training (CRAFT), and peer support improve treatment engagement and long-term recovery outcomes.
  • Identify common barriers to family engagement, including stigma, lack of education, caregiver burnout, and limited access to family-inclusive services.
  • Apply strengths-based, family-centered strategies to engage loved ones in treatment planning, recovery support, and relapse prevention efforts.

This educational activity is intended for behavioral health professionals, including Psychologists, Social Workers, Counselors, and MFT's.

    Caroline Beidler, MSW, is an author, speaker, and the managing editor of Recovery.com, an online resource that combines independent research with expert guidance on addiction and mental health treatment.

    Her own lived experience in addiction, mental health, and trauma recovery inspires her to help other others find recovery in all its varying forms. In four short years she has built a global network of recovery supporters through her storytelling platform and accompanying newsletter, Circle of Chairs, which reaches thousands weekly.
