Narcissism in the Age of i: Identifying and Addressing Narcissistic Personality Features in Clinical Practice

CE Hours 1

About this course

In the era of social media and armchair experts, perhaps no psychological concept is more misunderstood than narcissism. An essential player in personality development and self-esteem, poorly-regulated narcissistic defenses and self-concept are also uniquely capable of generating functional deficits and psychiatric symptomatology. In this presentation, we will define the concept of narcissism, explain its growing prevalence in modern society, and provide frameworks for detecting, discussing, and treating narcissism in the mental health patient. This event is appropriate for psychologists, counselors, social workers, and marriage and family therapists.

Learning Objectives

  • Define narcissism as an aspect of personality psychology using various theoretical models. Identify interview- and scale-based methods for assessing narcissistic traits that span narcissistic subtypes and increase diagnostic sensitivity.
  • Outline biological, psychological, and social factors contributing to the growing prevalence of narcissistic traits.
  • Describe strategies for identifying and treating narcissism in mental health patients.

Target Audience

This educational activity is intended for behavioral health professionals, including Psychologists, Social Workers, Counselors, and MFT's.
