CE Hours 1.5

About this course

This course provides a comprehensive exploration of suicide prevention and intervention through the lens of the ten most searched questions on the internet. Led by a public health researcher and suicidologist, the session breaks down the "thermometer" of suicidal thoughts, ranging from passive morbidity to active intent . Participants will learn how to identify subtle invitations for help, navigate difficult conversations with clients and families, and understand the clinical nuances of "high-functioning" suicidality . Learners will gain practical strategies for safety planning, lethal means restriction, and effective crisis resource utilization.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the spectrum of suicidal thoughts using the "thermometer" conceptualization to differentiate between passive ideation and imminent danger .
  • Identify behavioral "invitations" and indirect communication patterns that may indicate a client is considering suicide .
  • Explain the clinical significance of lethal means restriction and the impact of "means substitution" on suicide prevention.
  • Assess the role of "perceived burdensomeness" as a primary driver of suicidal desire and distorted thinking.
