Building Better Crisis Systems: 3 Pillars for Behavioral Health Emergency Care

CE Hours 1

About this live event

Behavioral health emergencies have historically been managed very differently than medical emergencies, with many individuals encountering law enforcement responses, prolonged emergency department boarding, and limited access to timely behavioral health care. The launch of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline has accelerated longstanding efforts to build comprehensive crisis systems and catalyzed unprecedented investment in crisis services nationwide. This webinar will provide an overview of the three pillars of a comprehensive crisis system—someone to contact, someone to respond, and a safe place for help—and highlight how communities across the country are building services around these foundational elements. Participants will explore emerging evidence on clinical outcomes, system performance, and cost impacts associated with crisis services, as well as key measures used to evaluate quality and effectiveness. The session will also examine ongoing policy, regulatory, workforce, and financing challenges and discuss opportunities for clinicians to help advance crisis system development in their own communities.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the three pillars of a comprehensive crisis system, including crisis call centers, mobile crisis response, and facility-based crisis services.
  • Identify key outcome measures and emerging evidence related to the effectiveness, quality, and cost impact of behavioral health crisis services.
  • Discuss policy, regulatory, workforce, financing, and implementation considerations that influence the development of crisis systems and opportunities for clinician engagement.

Target Audience

This educational activity is intended for behavioral health professionals, including Psychologists, Social Workers, Counselors, and MFT's.
